Thursday, 10th April 7.30pm at the Tinsley Institute (formerly CEGM) 120 Herring Rd, Macquarie Park 02 9878 0201 Events@morling.edu.au donation Randy Newman’s book, Questioning Evangelism, has created quite a stir in the USA. Visiting Sydney for the first time, Newman will take us through his revolutionary look at how to share Christ with unbelievers by using the probing, provocative, and penetrating method Jesus used to engage others in personal dialogue and caring interaction. This will be a practical and extremely useful seminar. Don’t miss it. |
NEW NAME, BROADER VISION: CEGM and CCE combine to form Tinsley Institute
The Centre for Evangelism & Global Mission (CEGM) and the Centre for Christian Ethics (CCE) are being combined to form a new, third entity called the Tinsley Institute. In doing so, it will expand its charter to include work in the area of public theology.
With the rise of interest in public theology and ethics there is great scope for the broadening of the work of both the CCE and the CEGM. Indeed, public theology is now an area that presents far greater opportunities for evangelism than ever before. Likewise, the CEGM’s commitment to mission and evangelism will be enhanced by the influence of public theology and ethics.
The current director of the CEGM, Michael Frost, will take over as director of the Tinsley Institute, and CCE’s Rod Benson will be the new Institute’s ethicist and director of public theology. Frost says, “There will be no watering down of the CEGM’s mandate to equip evangelists and missionaries. Rather, the development of the Tinsley Institute should be seen as strengthening that mandate.”
The Tinsley Institute team will also include Phill Marshall as missiologist and Steve Bartlett as director of church planting.
The decision to name the institute after the Tinsley family honours the fact that the original bequest for the formation of the CEGM came from Mrs Joy Tinsley in 1999. The Tinsleys have been well known for their commitment to evangelism, church growth and overseas mission and the new Institute will continue the association with the original donor and the original vision for equipping missional leaders for the church.
Rod Benson will continue to conduct research on a wide range of ethical issues and to provide relevant resources for churches, church agencies and individuals, while also contributing to academic and public policy debates on social and ethical issues from an evangelical perspective. He will also involve himself in lobbying state and federal governments on social and ethical issues.
The Tinsley Institute will be housed in the existing CEGM building on the Morling campus.
This is an exciting new development, signalling the need to integrate the church’s efforts in engaging with their world, whether in social justice, public policy, evangelism, church planting and cross cultural mission. |
