MCO501               Ministry Formation
Pre-requisites:  Nil
(4 Credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Formative factors in development, personhood and role, developmental, contextual and relational growth.  An introduction to issues faced by candidates in the process of preparing for Christian ministry.  This subject provides a relational basis for other subjects in pastoral ministry and counselling.

MCO502               Counselling Through the Human Life Span
Pre-requisites:  Nil
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Overview of the counselling issues related to lifespan development from birth to death. This course examines the main physical, cognitive, social and emotional development tasks and milestones in human development. Students explore counselling interventions that help people with life cycle transitions and interruptions to normal development.

MC0503                Pastoral Counselling
Pre-requisites:  Nil
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Pastoral care and counselling of persons as individuals and as family members in particular situations, and the development of micro skills.  Referral issues and professional, ethical and legal issues.  Special need populations.  Working as part of a health care team.

MCO504               Foundations of Counselling and Pastoral Care I  (Self-awareness and Therapeutic Communication)
Pre-requisites:  Nil
(4 Credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
This course is designed to foster the development of self awareness and understanding of the role of self awareness in counselling. It develops the foundational counselling attitudinal concepts and skills of sensitivity, attuning, attending, positive regard and respect. Students also reflect on the biblical concepts related to the nature of the counselling relationship, including the definitions and scope of Pastoral Care and Clinical Counselling.

MCO505               Foundations of Counselling and Pastoral Care II  (Stage models, Theory and Practice)
Pre-requisites:  MCO504.
(4 Credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
In this students develop a perspective on the nature and course of the counselling encounter. They develop an appreciation of the stages and dimensions of counselling and develop the foundational skills of assessment in counselling.  The field of social science and its relationship to counselling is explored from a Christian perspective. Students further reflect on the biblical concepts related to Counselling including the definitions and scope of”Christian counselling” and “Clinical Counselling”.

MCO506               Therapeutic Approaches to Counselling
Pre-requisites: Nil            Co-requisite      MCO504.
(4 Credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop an understanding of key influential theories and therapeutic approaches to counselling. Critically analyse and reflect on the different models and approaches to counselling. Recognise and examine theological and anthropological issues emerging from the practice of counselling. Evaluate counselling models in terms of their suitability for working from a Christian worldview perspective.

MC0512                Christian Approaches to Counselling
Pre-requisites: Nil            Co-requisites: MCO504.
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop an understanding of key influential theories and therapeutic approaches to counselling from a Christian perspective. Recognise and examine theological and anthropological issues emerging from the practice of counselling. Evaluate counselling models in terms of their suitability for working from a Christian worldview perspective.

MCO607               Introduction to Couple and Family Counselling
Pre-requisites:  MCO504, Co-requisite MCO505 and MCO506
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Family of origin and impact on relational counselling, introduction to couples and family therapy.  Developing frameworks for understanding family therapy.  Intensive seven week block of micro skills training on counselling.  Cross-cultural issues in family and relationship.

Pre-requisites:  MCO504.
(4 credit points, process group experience 2 hours per week, and residential)
Group theory, and group experiences and processes including therapeutic factors in a group setting and its relationship to counselling.

MCO611               Ethical Legal and Cultural Dimensions of Counselling Practice
Pre-requisites:  Nil
(4 Credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester 1)
Develop an understanding of some key concepts in moral philosophy and ethics theory. Become familiar with the ethical codes of counselling practice. This course evaluates ethical principles within cultural and socio-political contexts relevant to varied counselling settings.

MCO614               Introduction to Counselling Research
Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504.
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Evaluate research reports critically with special attention to implications for counselling practice. Identify the worldview beliefs and paradigms that are implicit in various approaches to the practice of counselling research. Develop an understanding of approaches to research and research designs and methods.

MCO615               Professional Reflection and Development
Pre-requisites:  MCO504, Co-requisite MCO505, MCO506 
(4 Credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
This subject looks at integration of theological concepts and spirituality with the practice of professional counseling in an ethical manner. Students will critically reflect on issues and topics related to the relational dimensions of the Christian counselor including power, influence, gender and religious and cultural diversity.  The student will reflect on the predominant modes of integration between theology and counselling and develop a construction of a comprehensive integrated approach to Christian Counselling.

MCO721               Individual Approaches to Counselling – Applied Theory and Methods
Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO611, MCO615
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Demonstrate and develop the ability to assess the indications and contraindications for individual psychotherapy. Develop professional competency in formulating and applying significant individual therapeutic theory and methods to unique treatment groups. Critically integrate the theory and practice of incorporating spirituality in counselling and psychotherapy.

Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO611, MCO615 and MCO721.
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop an approach to counselling that fosters personal integration theoretical coherence, and demonstrable efficacy. Establish a creative and responsive style to work with novel and unexpected events in the counselling process within a professional and ethical framework.  To recognise and engage in a culture of lifelong therapeutic learning and professional development.

MCO723               Couple Counselling – Applied Theory and Methods
Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO607, MCO611, MCO615. Co-requisites MCO721.
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop a competent working knowledge of adult attachment and systems theory as applied to couple therapy. Build an understanding of the impact of gender, culture and worldview on the practice of couple therapy. Build the therapeutic skills required work with both intrapsychic and interpersonal process.

(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop an approach to couple counselling that fosters personal integration theoretical coherence, and demonstrable efficacy. Establish a creative and responsive style to work with novel and unexpected events in couple counselling, within a professional and ethical framework. Develop an understanding of the multi professional community and context in which counsellor’s practice and develop multidisciplinary collaborative skills.

Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO607, MCO611, MCO615.Co-requisites MCO721.
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop a working understanding of key paradigms in family therapy. Build the therapeutic skills required to work within a systemic frame within family therapy. Enhance existing competencies as applied to the assessment of family and individual functioning. Critically integrate the theory and practice of incorporating spirituality in family counselling and psychotherapy.

Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO607, MCO611, MCO615, MCO721, MCO725. Co-requisites MCO722
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop the ability to apply theory and methods of Family Therapy to the various stages of family counselling. Build a responsive style to work with novel and unexpected events in the family counselling process within a professional and ethical framework. Critically evaluate family therapy approaches in terms of evidence-based knowledge and develop an integrative framework to inform family counselling practice.

MCO727               Group Counselling – Applied Theory and Methods
Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO610, MCO611, MCO615, Co-requisites: MCO721,
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Build an applied understanding of key paradigms in group therapy. Develop the skills of facilitation as applied to group therapy.  Be able to critically evaluate contemporary group therapy theory and practice and Identify indications for an individual’s suitability for group therapy.  Gain an understanding of diversity and ethics and how they impact on group therapy. Critically integrate the theory and practice of incorporating spirituality in group therapy.

MCO728               Group Counselling – Professional Integration
Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO611, MCO615, MCO612, MCO721, MCO727.  Co-requisites MCO722
(4 credit points, 3 hours per week for 1 semester)
Develop the ability to apply advanced group facilitation to diverse group therapy and treatment programmes including anger management, substance dependency, domestic violence, psycho education, anxiety management, and step programs.

MCO733               Supervised Counselling Practicum – Externship
Pre-requisites:  MCO502, MCO504, MCO505, MCO506, MCO 611, MCO612, MCO615.
(16 credit points, 6 hours per week for 2 semesters)
This subject requires the student to be able to articulate and demonstrate an appropriate level of competence in counselling assessment, problem formulation and intervention strategies.  Be able to demonstrate competence in applied ethical, legal and professional matters. Be able to demonstrate case conceptualisation and application of counselling skill and knowledge to target populations and apply competent counselling skills in a professional setting.
