Leadership Forums
The Centre for Leadership runs three leadership forums every year.
Past Leadership Forums have included valuable and practical input by:
Mark Wilson: Mark is the Director of Ministries for the Baptist Churches of Western Australia. During his 16 years as pastor of Whitford Church in Perth, the church grew from 180 to 1,100 average attendance on Sunday, 25 different nationalities in the church, 20 plus staff, $350 000 mission giving in the last year (which is over and above tithing), and innovative
outreach into community, country, and world. He led a significant building programme, the planting of 5 churches, and the establishment of one church on two distinct campuses, and Whitford Church averaged between 50 to 80 baptisms most years, over 1000 people in small group, 250 key volunteer leaders, and 700 people serving in volunteer ministries. During his leadership forum with
us, Mark focused on governance issues and servant-leadership in church life, in the light of releasing leaders, leadership teams, and a leadership culture in the congregation. He addressed the issues of releasing leadership through getting church governance right, while maintaining a servant-leadership spirit - i.e. how revisiting governance issues in church life must be balanced
with servant-leadership.
Terry Walling: Terry is the co-founder of Leader Breakthru, has trained, consulted and coached hundreds of leaders over the past twenty years of leadership development resourcing. He also serves on staff with Church Resource Ministries (CRM), and as leader of Matthew’s Café - http://www.matthewscafe.com. Terry
Walling spoke with us about the Heart of a Leader. He shared on how leaders are formed over a lifetime, how God shapes leaders, and how leaders can better understand their roles in Christian leadership and ministry.
Andrew Menzies: Andrew is the Senior Pastor of Camberwell Baptist Church in Melbourne where he is leading a 100+ year old church through a process of change and renewal, including revitalizing the missional initiatives of the church. In this exciting and challenging role, Andrew finds himself encountering various resources, trends and hazards in ministry including
the place of the gathered and dispersed community, helping his congregation engage in local theology, exploring the church’s history and narratives, and countering Christian consumerism. Andrew helped us reflect on processes and practices for renewing established local churches.
David Starling: David currently teaches at Morling College, and previously served as a Baptist pastor in Petersham from 2000 to 2006. During that period the church underwent significant change in direction and ethos, and was remarkably revitalized, growing into a cluster of three congregations and developing missional connections among tertiary students,
boarding house residents and other groups and sub-communities within the diverse Inner West of Sydney. One of the three congregations is a church plant in Summer Hill. David shared some of the experiences, struggles and lessons learnt as part of that journey. |
