A Learning Community
A Living Community
A Developing Community

As the church, we are called to fulfil God’s mission in the world. This requires that we know the Word of God, have a firm grasp of the history, doctrines and traditions of the whole church and the skills to carry out this ministry in the context of modern life and thought.

A learning Community
Growing in the knowledge of God and his Word is the foundation of all academic and practical training at Morling College. This involves:

  • a thorough overview of the Old Testament and New Testament
  • a detailed study of particular books (which can be studied in Hebrew or Greek)
  • integration of theoretical, historical and contemporary contexts, spiritual formation and practical elements
  • specific study in pastoral care, worship, evangelism, youth and children's ministry, ethics, counselling and missiology.

Morling's learning community offers a variety of learning experiences which include:

  • 1 year to 4 year courses
  • course with differing academic levels and emphasis
  • full-time, part-time study, evening classes and distance education
  • specialised courses in counselling, children’s or youth ministry and teacher education (through Southland College)
  • conferences and training events for people involved in Christian ministry
  • in-ministry experience through mentoring and supervision by experienced ministers and Christian leaders

A Living Community
Morling College has the aim of developing a community life in which students and staff share in mutual enrichment.
Our living community is seen in:

  • communal worship through weekly chapel services
  • small group meetings for fellowship and prayer
  • our multi-cultural student body
  • community lunches
  • live-on campus experiences for singles, couples and families
  • student groups such as J@M (Justice at Morling), who engage in justice and poverty issues in Australia and around the world
  • a Student Representative Group which oversees student matters
  • College retreats at the start of each year

A Developing Community
Morling College is a developing community, connected to its past and looking to the future. Since the first Baptist service in Australia was held in 1831 in the ‘Rose and Crown’ Hotel in Castlereagh Street, Sydney, Baptist ministry has sought to engage with the world and bring God's word to people.

Since 1916, a Baptist Theological College in NSW has been equipping people who want to impact their world. The College has been located in:

  • Petersham (1922-1926),
  • Granville (1926-1933) ,
  • Ashfield (1934-1961)
  • and now at its present five-hectare property at Macquarie Park, adjacent to Macquarie University.

In 1985 the College was named ‘Morling College’ to honour the contribution made by the Rev GH Morling, who served as Principal from 1921-1960.

In 1976 the College became a member college of the Australian College of Theology (ACT) and has continued to develop its training programs through:

  • developing and extending the courses available (now from Certificate level to Doctoral Studies)
  • offering distance education (since 1998)
  • offering a Graduate Diploma in Christian Counselling accredited by the Department of Education and Training.
  • offering postgraduate Teacher education through Southland College (Since 2004)offering a Certificate IV in Christian Studies through PLUNGE - our gap-year program partnering with Baptist Youth Ministries (starting in 2008)
